Here are 10 interesting facts about the Titanic.

 

The Titanic was HUGE

The Titanic was about 269 meters (882 feet) long, which is almost the length of three football fields!

 

It was built to be unsinkable

People called the Titanic "unsinkable" because it had 16 watertight compartments, but unfortunately, it still sank.

 

A famous shipbuilder designed it

The Titanic was built by Harland and Wolff in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and it took over two years to finish.

 

The Titanic was super luxurious

The ship had a swimming pool, a gym, fancy dining rooms, and even elevators, which were rare in those days.

 

It was on its first trip

The Titanic sank on its very first voyage, called a "maiden voyage," traveling from Southampton,

England, to New York City.

 

A tragic iceberg collision

The Titanic hit an iceberg on the night of April 14, 1912, and sank in the early hours of April 15, 1912.

 

Not enough lifeboats

The Titanic only had 20 lifeboats, which wasn't enough for all 2,224 passengers and crew on board.

 

Survivors and loss

About 700 people survived, but over 1,500 people sadly lost their lives in the disaster.

 

The Titanic was lost for decades

The shipwreck was found in 1985, over 70 years after it sank, at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean.

 

A famous movie was made about it

The story of the Titanic became super famous thanks to the movie Titanic (1997), which shows the romance and tragedy of the ship.
